Here I discuss a way in which Aristotle's Poetics can provide an invaluable tool for understanding the role of great literature in our lives. This is especially important for our project here of fathers sharing great literature with their sons. Specifically, I discuss the way in which a very important passage from the Poetics is a kind of skeleton key for opening up all great literature in a way that makes it most relevant for our lives. At issue here is the way in which we understand just how invaluable the role of imagination is for the ethical and political life of man, especially the lives of young boys seeking to grow into good men.
